Sasol: Mining / Engineering Bursaries 2024

The Sasol Mining Fence-line Bursary Programme seeks to attract outstanding young talent to join the organization. These bursaries support full-time studies leading to a bachelor’s degree (B.Sc. or B.Eng.) or an Engineering Technology Degree (B.Eng. Tech.) at a recognized South African University. Eligibility is limited to South African Citizens exclusively.

Fields for Study

Applicants may submit their applications for degree programs (excluding diplomas) in the designated fields of study if they are presently enrolled as 1st to 4th-year students pursuing B. Engineering / B.Sc. Engineering at a South African University (excluding University of Technology), with the exception of those studying mine surveying at a University of Technology.

The eligible disciplines are as follows:

Engineering:  

  1. Electrical Engineering (B.Eng.)
  2. Electronic Engineering (B.Eng.)
  3. Industrial Engineering (B.Eng.)
  4. Mechanical Engineering (B.Eng.)
  5. Mining Engineering (B.Eng.)

Science:  

  1. Geology (B.Sc.) – Please be aware that obtaining an Honours degree is mandatory for pursuing this field of study.

Engineering Technology Degree:  

  1. Mine Surveying (B.Eng. Tech.) at the University of Johannesburg only

Selection Criteria:

Bursaries are available to individuals in their 1st to 4th academic year of studies in 2024, pursuing the relevant qualifications or degrees.

First-year applicants should provide their Grade 12 results, Second-year students must submit their first-year results, Third-year students are required to submit their second-year results, and Fourth-year students must submit their third-year results, all meeting the specified minimum requirements:

B.Eng. and B.Sc.Eng & Geology

  • Level 6:  70 -79% for Mathematics (not Maths Literacy)
  • Level 6:  70 -79% for Physical Science
  • Level 5:  60 – 69% for English First Additional language or
  • Level 5:  60 – 69% for English home language or
  • Level 4:  50 – 59% for English Second Additional language

B.Eng. Tech. (Mine Surveying) 

  • Level 5:  60 – 69% for Mathematics (not Maths Literacy) and
  • Level 5:  60 – 69% for Physical Science and
  • Level 5:  60 – 69% for English First Additional language or
  • Level 5:  60 – 69% for English home language or
  • Level 4:  50 – 59% for English Second Additional language

Please note:

  • Applicants must be South African citizens with a valid ID document/card.
  • full academic record(from start date of studies to end 2023) and proof of registration is required when students apply.
  • Proof of permanent home residence –municipality and district (the address you will return to during holidays) will be required when students apply.
  • Note that the bursary offer will be withdrawn/terminated should it be determined that the student has not physically permanently resided in one of the municipalities specified during the date of application/awarding of the bursary.
  • All bursaries awarded are subject to the condition that applicant should be able to complete studies within amaximum period of 5 years (from start date to completion date for the specific degree course).  The minimum criteria will still be valid though.
  • Bursaries is will not be availed to students enrolled for so-called dual/combined/hybrid degree program.
  • Students should be discouraged to apply for a bursary, well knowing that they are not complying with the requirements of this bursary programme/applying with false intensions as it may lead to termination of the contact.
  • Please note that all notifications regarding the status of student applications (whether successful or unsuccessful) will be provided by the end of April.

NB. The municipalities in Mpumalanga and the Free State that will be included in the selection criteria for our fenceline communities are as follows:

Mpumalanga – Gert Sibande District – Secunda Fenceline

  • Govan Mbeki Municipality: Bethal, Brendan Village, Charl Cilliers, Davel, eMbalenhle, eMzinoni (Bethal), Evander, Kinross, Leandra, Legogang, Leslie, Secunda, Trichardt
  • Lekwa Local Municipality: Holmdene, Morgenzon, Standerton
  • Dipaleseng Local Municipality: Balfour, Greylingstad, Grootvlei, Siyathemba, Val
  • eMalahleni: Ga-Nala, Kriel, Ogies, Rietspruit, Thubelihle, van Dyksdrift, Wilge, Witbank
  • Msukaligwa Local Municipality: Ermelo, Wesselton

Fezile Dabi District (Free State) – Sasolburg Fenceline

  • Metsimaholo Local Municipality: Deneysvilles, Oranjeville, Sasolburg, Tshepiso, Vaalpark, Zamdela
  • Ngwathe Local Municipality: Edenville, Galeshewe, Heilbron, Koppies, Kwakwatsi, Parys

How to Apply

Applications must be submitted online by following these steps:

NEW USERS (who have not previously registered on the Sasol Bursary website), must follow these steps to apply:

  • 1) Register on the Sasol Bursaries platform by filling in all the required information.
  • 2) You will receive a email to activate your account – click on “Activate Account”.
  • 3) You will then be directed to a screen to verify your email address and to create a password.
  • 4) After verifying your email and creating a password, you will be directed to the Login page
  • 5) Fill in your email address and password to login.
  • 6) Click on “South African Bursary Application” in the top left corner.
  • 7) Click on “Undergraduate Applications”.
  • 8) Fill in all the required information – do not leave any fields blank.
  • 9) Read and accept the disclaimer (the white button should turn blue).
  • 10) You will then receive an email response on your application – once you receive the email, you may close the application.

PREVIOUSLY REGISETERED USERS (on the Sasol Bursary website) may continue their application by Logging in
