The City of Johannesburg (CoJ) is offering Internship opportunities to suitably qualified and unemployed graduates. The Interships will run for a a period NOT exceeding eighteen (18) months. 

Interns will be required to sign an internship agreement, in additional to an employment contract, committing themselves to full participation in the educational and workplace assignments in accordance with laid-down policies and procedures.

Stipend: R9 531,54 pm (Basic Salary, no benefits)

Duration: 18 months contract

Internship: Trainee Investigator

Department: Office of the Ombudsman

Currently pursuing or recently completed a Degree in:

  • Law,
  • Public Administration,
  • Political Science,
  • Human Rights
  • or a related field

Duties: Complaint intake and Initial assessment. Investigative support. Research and analysis. Documentation and reporting. Stakeholder engagement. Awareness and outreach. Quality assurance and compliance. Professional development.

Skills and Competencies: Ability to critically evaluate information, identify key issues and draw logical conclusions during the investigative process. Capable of conducting thorough research and analysing data to support findings and recommendations. Collaborative/Teamwork, Values and Integrity, Attention to detail, and quality-focused. Internship: Media, Public Relations and Channel Marketing Specialist

Department: Group Finance

Degree in:

  • Journalism.
  • Communications
  • Public Relations
  • Media Studies

Duties: Plan, develop, implement, track and manage. Media, public relations and channel marketing campaigns across all the media channels. Create and maintain a favourable brand image of Group Finance and the City’s services and its products.  Manage the Department’s and Joburg brand and raise awareness of the city’s priorities, programmes and projects. Build relationships and respond to media questions/queries of print and online residents and customers in a timely, accurate and honest manner. Build relationships and work effectively with colleagues to disperse appropriate media, public relations and channel marketing communications content. Review and monitor the effectiveness of Group Finance and the city’s print, electronic, digital and online media activities and assess it against goals (e.g. ROI and KPIs). Research emerging technologies and trends and provide thought leadership and perspective for adoption where appropriate. Manage the outcomes associated with the utilisation, productivity and performance of staff in the media and public relations sub-unit;

Skills and Competencies: Sound knowledge of creating relevant media lists specific to events/press releases. Knowledge of local government and relevant legislation, current affairs, and South African media both print and electronic. Knowledge of Batho Pele and Corporate Governance principles. Conceptualizing and executing briefs/[presentations.  Collaborative/Teamwork, Values and Integrity, Attention to detail, and quality-focused. Internship: Marketing Specialist – Graphic Designer

Department: Group Finance

Diploma / Degree in:

  • Graphic Design
  • Graphic Design and Digital Media
  • Marketing
  • Web Design
  • or related field;

Duties: Develops, conceptualises, plans, designs, and produces a wide range of specialized graphic and/or illustrative material, to include multimedia concepts, as appropriate for all marketing strategies and campaigns across all units. Managing the Group Finance channels (touch points) – emails, websites and raising awareness of the City’s priorities, programmes and projects. Build relationships and respond to the questions / queries of Group Finance Units in a timely, accurate and honest manner. Review and monitor the effectiveness of the City’s, Group Finance, Municipal Entities graphic design activities and assessing them against goals (e.g., ROI and KPIs). Do research of emerging technologies and trends and providing thought leadership and perspective for adoption where appropriate. Manages the outcomes associated with the utilisation, productivity and performance of staff in the graphic design sub-unit.

Skills and Competencies: Solid knowledge of CorelDRAW® Graphics Suite, Adobe Creative Cloud, website analytics tools (e.g., Google Analytics, WebTrends) and Search Engine Optimization (SEO) techniques. Working knowledge of ad serving tools.  Working knowledge of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript development and constraints. Internship: Environmental Awareness and Partnerships

Department: Environmental and Infrastructure Service Department (EISD)

Diploma/Degree in:

  • Environmental Management,
  • Environmental Sciences,
  • Conservation Management
  • or closely related disciplines

Duties: Implement the Environmental Education and Awareness (EEA) Strategy and related policies through relevant stakeholder committees. Coordinate the rendering of corporate environmental education and capacity-building functions through the facilitation of environmental communications and provision of awareness support to the department. Facilitate the provision of community outreach and stakeholder engagement functions through managing external environmental education and awareness, as well as education programmes planning and reviews. Contribute to business planning and reporting activities of the sub-unit. Comply with the Performance Management Strategies of the City.

Skills and Competencies: Knowledge and understanding of environmental issues and relevant legislation. Understanding of environmental education principles/approaches.
